Abstract
654,381. Electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides. NORA, O. DE. Oct. 15, 1947, No. 27607. Convention date, Feb. 27. [Class 41] In apparatus for the electrolysis of alkalimetal chlorides by means including a cathode of mercury which forms an analgam and is subsequently recovered for return to the electrolytic apparatus, the mercury is circulated by a single pump through at least two cells arranged in series or in parallel, the cells are coupled electrically in series, and means are provided for interrupting the flow of mercury to prevent short-circuiting. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, three cells A1 A2, A3 are connected in parallel to an amalgam decomposer D and a pump P. Valves E1, E2, E3 and U1, U2, U3 are provided which are capable of interrupting the metallic continuity of the mercury so that the mercury can flow without the passage of electric current, and therefore the connection of the cells electrically in series is unaffected. Instead of one decomposer, three may be provided, connected each to a cell. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the cells are connected in series with the pump P and decomposer D. The valves shown are similar to those shown in Fig. 1. In a modification there are provided two pumps, one for each pair of cells, and four decomposers, one for each cell.
