Abstract

1,066,198. Printing-apparatus. ELECTROSTATIC PRINTING CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 7, 1964 [April 15, 1903], No. 14376/64. Heading B6C. A printing surface suitable for use with powdered printing material comprises a porous body 10, Fig. 2, which has a plurality of openings 12 therein, the said openings being smaller than the particles of the powder which may be in the dry state or in the form of a slurry, and a mask 14 provided with cut-out portions 16 which provide a pattern for the desired image. The porous material may be sintered bronze particles, fibrous steel or ceramic, fibrous or plastics material treated to make it conductive. The mask may be produced by cutting out paper tape, photographically treating a gelatine emulsion, or printing on the body 10 with a liquid which hardens. Intaglio printing.-In the embodiment of Fig. 3 a mask 32 is located on a porous conductive cylinder 20 partially immersed in a container 34 containing electroscopic powder particles. Suction is applied to the interior of the cylinder 20 except for the segment defined by walls 28, 30 at the image transfer position by a suction source 24 and air under pressure is supplied through apertures in the base of the container 34 so that the particles form a cloud and as the cylinder rotates they are drawn against the exposed portions of the cylinder. A doctor blade 36 removes excess powder and the powder image is transferred to the web 38 when the suction is removed from the portion of the cylinder between the walls 28, 30, by applying positive air pressure within said walls, or with the help of an electric field established between the cylinder 20 and a plate 44 with the aid of a roller electrode 48. Fig. 11 (not shown) depicts an embodiment in which an intaglio cylinder co-operates with a porous impression roller, the interior of which is connected to a source of suction to draw the powder impression on to a porous web. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which a plurality of planar intaglio printing surfaces 110-120 are supported on housings 122-132 carried by a chain 138, suction being applied when the surfaces are over a powder container 136 and at every station except the image transfer station at which the powder images are transferred to a container such as 104 on a conveyer 108. Stencilling apparatus.-The mask may be movable independently of the porous cylinder either in web form, Fig. 5 (not shown), or in the form of an endless belt, Fig. 9 (not shown), and Fig. 10. In Fig. 10 a multi-colour image is applied to the cylinder through three endless stencil bands supported by rollers. The image transfer to the web 194 may be aided when the suction to the interior of the cylinder is removed by an electric field.
