Abstract
1,064,887. Valves. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO. OF CANADA Ltd. April 22, 1965 [Apri 23, 1964], No. 17039/65. Heading F2V. [Also in Divisions F1 and F4] A plurality of compressed air-operated singlestroke piston and cylinder devices (23, 21), Fig. 1 (not shown), are actuated sequentially by associated three-land spool valves (2) each spool (12) being movable between rest and cocked positions within a body (3) having a main air inlet port (10), a port (9) connected to one end of its associated motor cylinder (21), or port (11) connected by a duct (34), Fig. 4 (not shown) to the main inlet port (10) of the next valve in the series and an exhaust port (8) the arrangement of ports and lands (13, 17, 18) being such that when the valve spool is in the next position it connects main inlet port (10) to port (11) and connects port (9) to exhaust port (8) whereas in the cocked position, Fig. 2 (not shown), inlet port (10) is connected to port (9) and ports (8, 11) are isolated and assuming all the valves to be cocked, compressed air when admitted to inlet (10) and port (9) of the first valve advances piston (23), and air in front thereof is forced through a cylinder end port (24) and a passage (20) to the end (4) of the valve body (3) to return the spool (12) to its rest position thus allowing compressed air to pass from ports (10, 11) through conduit (34) to the inlet port (10) of the next valve in the series which remains cocked until advance of the piston of its associated motor is completed. Air compressed by each piston (23) during advance serves to return the piston against substantially no load since the space behind it is connected to exhaust port (8) and the piston is held in retracted position by inlet air being bled through a passage 32 in load (18). Simultaneous cocking of the valves is effected by feeding compressed air from a leader (30) through ducts (36) leading to ports 19 in the ends 5 of the valve bodies. The advance stroke of the piston-rod (25) may scrape crust from a furnace tuyere or may operate a metal stamping tool.
