Abstract

1,063,860. Spray-producers. SONIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 24, 1964 [Feb. 25, 1963], No. 7570/64. Addition to 1,034,560. Heading B2F. [Also in Divisions F4 and G5] In a liquid atomizer, which is based upon the Hartmann type whistle, jets of liquid are directed into the path of sonic pressure waves which effect the liquid atomization. The convergent-divergent nozzle 20 produces a supersonic gas jet having a region where the pressure is less than ambient pressure and which is directed into a cavity 18 where the alternate build up and release of pressure produces sonic pressure waves. Liquid emitted from feed holes 35 is directed into the path of the pressure waves and atomized and the resulting particles then drift out into the medium. The low pressure region in the gas stream produces periodic inrushes of gas which help to draw the liquid into the region where the pressure waves are most concentrated. In further embodiments Fig. 7 and 8 (not shown) the liquid is fed to an anulus surrounding the nozzle and connecting with the exit of the nozzle by spaced apart peripheral channels also a further jet of gas is provided for driving the cloud of particles away from the atomizer. The atomizer can be used as a liquid fuel inlet jet for a furnace.
