Abstract

[Also in Division B2] A spray device comprises a sonic generator, provided with a cavity resonator 70 having side walls 72 terminating in a shoulder 74 and an air inlet pipe 12 terminating in a tapered nozzle 60 directed towards said cavity, and a plug member 48 in the pipe 12 provided with an axial liquid supply bore 52 and at its end with a plurality of radial apertures 78 communicating with said axial bore. Air under pressure introduced into the pipe 12 is emitted as a supersonic jet stream from the nozzle 60 and converted into sonic waves of compression and rarefaction by the cavity resonator 70. The outer surface 35 of the nozzle 60 provides a deflecting surface for the high velocity sonic waves generated by the resonator and the configuration of the surface is such that a low pressure area is formed adjoining the apertures 78 so that liquid emerging from the apertures is drawn into the downwardly reflected sound field. The high intensity sonic wave action operating on the air molecules causes turbulence resulting in atomization of the liquid into a micromist. The angle of diffusion may be varied by adjusting the distance between the nozzle and the resonator, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
