Abstract

1,060,241. Dispersing dye developer solutions. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 2, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No.8808/64. Heading G2C. A dispersion of a stabilized solution of a dye developer in a hydrophilic organic colloid is obtained by taking a solution of a dye developer in a water immiscible organic solvent having a boiling point of at least 175‹C. and dispersing it in a hydrophilic organic colloid and before and/or during and/or after forming the dispersion contacting the dye developer with a water-soluble sulphite e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium sulphite. The water-immiscible solvents specified are those listed in Specification 541, 589 and also guaiacol acetate, tetrahydrofurfuryl propionate; triethyl citrate, acetyl triethyl citrate, ditetrahydrofurfuryl adipate, N, N-dialkyl lauramides, N-lauroyl piperidine; N, N, N', N'-tetraethylphthalimide, 4-methyl-2-pentanol and 2, 4-di-n-amyl phenol. The water-immiscible solvent may be mixed with an auxiliary solvent e.g. alkyl alkanoates, butylalcohol, nitroethane, chloroform, methyl isobutyl ketone, #-ethoxyethylacetate, #-butoxy- #-ethoxyethylacetate, diethylene glycol monoacetate, #-methoxy methyl acetate, acetonyl acetone, cyclohexanone, triethyl phosphate, diacetone alcohol, diethylene glycol mono-methylether, ethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, acetone, ethanol, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide and dioxane. Specified hydrophilic colloids are gelatine, gelatine derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol and its water-soluble derivatives, copolymers of acrylamide and imidised acrylamide, albumin and cellulose derivatives. The sulphite may be added as an aqueous solution to a dispersion melt or the dispersion may be washed with aqueous sulphite. Dispersion may be facilitated with surface active agents e.g. sodium diisopropyl naphthalene sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphonate, p-tert-octyl phenoxy diethoxyethyl sulphonate sodium salt, p-tert octyl phenoxy diethoxy ethyl sulphate ammonium salt, sodium N-methyl-N- oleyl taurate, diisobutyl-cresoxyethoxy ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and diisobutyl phenoxy ethoxy ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The dispersions obtained may be used to form layers suitable for use in the materials of Specification 1, 03, 675.
