Abstract

1,154,781. Sensitizing photographic lightsensitive materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. June 21, 1966 [June 21, 1965], No.27678/66. Heading G2C. Photographic light-sensitive materials, such as silver halide, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide materials, are optically sensitized by the addition of a sensitizing composition containing a waterinsoluble spectral sensitizing dye dispersed in an aqueous hydrophilic colloid, the average dispersed dye particle size being less than one micron diameter. The composition is made by dissolving the dye in an organic solvent, dispersing the solution into the aqueous hydrophilic colloid and removing the solvent from the dispersion by evaporation or by forming an emulsion of the solution in the colloid and allowing the solvent to dissolve into the aqueous colloid. Solvents specified include methanol, acetone, pentanol-2, n-butanol, 2-methyl-propanol, cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, benzene and #-phenoxyethanol. The solvent may be saturated with dye at an elevated temperature before being dispersed in the colloid and a surface-active agent may be present. The sensitizing composition may be added to a silver halide emulsion, to a binder-free silver halide layer or to zinc oxide or titanium oxide.
