Abstract

1,058,244. Emptying tanks. ISHIKAWAJIMA - HARIMA JUKOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Aug. 2, 1963 [Aug. 2, 1962], No. 30702/63. Heading B8T. A relatively small secondary tank is in fluid communication with a main tank, and a pump in fluid communication with the secondary tank draws liquid from the main tank through the secondary one, the latter being associated with means for reducing the pressure therein. The main liquid storage tank 12 of a ship is subdivided by bulkheads 14 into a number of compartments, and a secondary airtight liquid tank 16 is adjacent the main one. Centrifugal pumps 36 draw liquid from the tank 16 through bell mouth fixtures 44, valves 42 and pipes 40, 56 and supply it to receiving apparatus 57. The removal of liquid from the tank 16 reduces the pressure therein whereby, when valves 48 in a pipe line 46 are opened liquid is drawn from the main tank through bell mouth fixtures 50 into the tank 16. When the main tank liquid level reaches a point where air is drawn into the tank 16, and liquid within the latter reaches a predetermined low level, a valve 74 is opened and an ejector 68 supplied with compressed air from a tank 64 is operated to remove air from the tank 16, to bring its pressure and liquid level back to the normal operating position. If the quantity of air drawn into the secondary tank is so great that the liquid level cannot be prevented from falling below a critical level by the ejector, a three-way valve 58 is adjusted to return liquid to the tank via pipes 60 and valves 62. The tank 16 can be divided into a number of compartments to provide for more than one type of fluid to be separately removed from its corresponding main tank.
