Abstract
1,086,842. Discharging liquid cargo from ships. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. July 5, 1965 [Aug. 3, 1964], No. 28386/65. Heading B8E. [Also in Division B7] Apparatus for discharging liquid cargo from a deep compartment in a water-borne-tanker 11, Fig. 2, comprises an outlet in the compartment below water level in the side or bottom thereof, a flexible-pipe line 13 connected to the outlet, a shore-based discharge pump 29 located at a depth below the water level sufficient to ensure that a pressure head is maintained at the suction side of the pump during cargo withdrawal, a flexible pipe line 23 connected to the inlet of the pump and a releasable coupling 21 for connecting the pipe lines 13, 23. The pipes 13, 23 are adapted to be interconnected above the water level and then lowered into the water. When not connected the pipe 13 extends within a recess 41, Fig. 3 (not shown), provided in the hull of the tanker, the recess being covered by a plate 43. The latter may be attached to the hose 13 or hinged to the hull or slidable into place. A plurality of pipe lines and pumps may be provided, Figs. 1 and 4 (not shown). The recess 41 and plate 43 may be dispensed with.
