Abstract

1457641 Preventing fires in tanker holds WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON Ltd 16 May 1975 [21 June 1974] 27754/74 Heading- A5A A tanker ship cargo pumping system has means for supplying inert gas to the cargo tanks 1 whilst or before liquid is pumped from the tanks, and means are provided for controlling the rate of discharge of the cargo handling pumps to ensure that the pressure of the inert gas above the cargo level in the tank is not reduced below that of the surrounding atmosphere. In the arrangement shown, a line 6 carries inert gas from the supply (this may be exhaust from the ships engine, or from a gas generator) to each tank 1, and a line 8, is coupled to line 6, incorporates a gas pressure sensing device 9 which in turn is connected to a pressure controller/transducer 10 and a selector relay 11. In response to the signal received from the device 9, the relay 11 may operate to. either control the valve of the cargo handling pump, or to reduce the speed of the pump to reduce the rate of cargo discharge should the inert gas pressure fall.
