Abstract
1,126,785. Ballast bags for tankers. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 16 May, 1967 [6 July, 1966], No. 30267/66. Headings B7A, B7M and B7S. In a tank ship at least one cargo tank contains secured therein a collapsible ballast bag 10 suitable for containing ballast water, each bag being supported on a grating 11 near the bottom of the tank so that the ballast bag is clear of the sump 18 and the inlet 19 which also serves as an outlet. On pumping out the ballast water air inlet 21 is opened so that pipes and pump 16 are not damaged as any remaining water in them is cleared into the ballast bag, which being flexible accommodates expansion of the water on liquefied gases being loaded. Contamination is avoided and increase of cargo carrying capacity is achieved.
