Abstract

899,266. Preventing fires and explosions in fuel tanks. DE JONGHE, R. G. L. G., and POL, R. Sept. 25, 1958 [Sept. 25, 1957], No. 30714/58. Class 47. A fuel storage installation comprises a fuel Storage tank 1 Fig. 1 and a water supply and discharge device 4 including means for automatically feeding said device from a source of water, said storage tank and said device 4 being connected in such a manner that by passage of water to and fro between the tank 1 and the device 4 the level of the fuel in the storage tank is kept substantially constant, the fuel floating on a greater or lesser amount of water. One or more pipes 8, 10 are provided for admitting fuel to the tank 1 from a supply container 7 or for removing fuel from the tank I to a delivery container 12. One or more further pipes 9 connected to the tank 1 are provided for supplying water to the supply container 7 or removing water from the delivery container 12. In use, water passes to the container 7 or from the container 12 in amount equal to the amount of fuel supplied to or delivered from the tank 1. The water supply arrangement may comprise a container 4 having a float-valve controlled inlet and an overflow outlet, the float valve being arranged to close when the water in the container 4 reaches a height which is in pressure equilibrium with the contents of the tank 1 when filled with fuel. Alternatively, the container 4 may be replaced by a water supply and relief valve Fig. 4 (not shown) automatically operated in response to changes of liquid pressure in the tank 1.
