Abstract

<PICT:1057970/C4-C5/1> An apparatus for making town gas by cracking a heavy oil fraction with steam and oxygen and carburetting the hot cracked gas with petroleum comprises four units in series: a combustion chamber 1, a carburetter 2 comprising a horizontal, semicircular tube with spaced inlets 12, 13 for quenching water and petroleum respectively, an after-reaction zone 3 . . . 5 comprising two brick-lined tubes 3, 4 inter-connected by a similarly lined arch 5, and a waste head boiler 6 connected to the tube 4 by a flange 20. The tube 2 has a water jacket and the arch 5 may be horizontal. The dimensions of the tube 2 are important; the diameter of the arch is 5 to 10 times the interior diameter of the tube, and the spacing of the inlets 12, 13 is 0.8 to 2.4 metres (80 to 160 degrees angularly). These values ensure a gas velocity in the tube 2 of 10 to 30 metres/sec. (to diminish tar and soot formation) and a dwell in the tube 2 by the injected water of 0.05 to 0.2 seconds. The dwell in the zone 3 . . . 5 should be at least 3.5 seconds to hydrogenate the cracked gas and make CH4. A specific example is described.
