Abstract

1,055,752. Stoppers for ladle nozzles. VESUVIUS CRUCIBLE CO. May 11, 1965 [May 13, 1964], No. 19930/65. Heading F4B. The two halves 2a, 2b of a sectional insert for screw-connecting a flange stopper rod 12 into the internally-threaded well of a refractory stopper head 11 are formed in situ by fracturing a fired unitary and generally cylindrical insert 2 along lines of weakness formed therein by diametrically opposed axial slits 5 extending part way therethrough. The abutting faces 7 of the sections mate together, the spaced-apart portions 8, Fig. 2 (not shown), constituting the opposed faces of the slits 5. The insert transmits the thrust of sleeves 14 protecting the rod 12 to the rod flange 13, thereby relieving the head 11 of such thrust. The insert is made of clay and graphite and may be of the bayonet-junction type instead of the screw-threaded type.
