A saggar comprises a refractory base 2 with upwardly tapered side and end walls 3 and 4 and a base 5 having a length : width ratio of 4 : 3, said saggar being divided into two identical portions 6 and 7 with tongue and recess mating surfaces 11, 12. A metal strap 14, removed at the entrance of a kiln as the saggar enters loaded for example with spark plug insulator blanks, is replaced at the other end of the kiln.
