Abstract

1,055,624. Vehicle. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 27, 1965 [Dec. 4. 1963], No. 48006/63. Heading B7L. A normal or underground railway vehicle comprises a body supported on a bogie by resilient members attached at their ends to the body and the bogie which members permit by shearing action relative movements in a horizontal plane between the body and the bogie and are subjected to substantially all the weight of the body, and pivot means connecting the body to the bogie whereby tractional and braking forces are transmitted therebetween, said pivot means supporting substantially none of the weight of the body. In an embodiment, Figs. 1 (not shown) and 2 of the accompanying drawing, the body 110 of a normal railway vehicle is supported on the bolster 113 of a bogie 111 by side bearers 114 comprising rubber blocks bonded between metal plates, and a pivot pin 115, Fig. 1 (not shown), is fixed to the body 110 and received in a resilient bushing 116 in a metal bushing 117 fastened to the bolster 113 by a Watts linkage 118, 120 and 121. The bolster 113 is connected by springs 130 and a linkage 131, Fig. 1 (not shown), to the bogie frame 112. The side bearers 114 may instead comprise helical or pneumatic springs, or rubber blocks without metal plates. In another embodiment, Figs. 1-3, of the Provisional drawings (not shown), the body 10 of an underground railway vehicle is supported by side bearers 23, 24 on a bogie 11, a one- or two-piece yoke 30 being connected at 31, 32 to one plate in each bearer and the pivot pin 25 passing through a central aperture of the yoke, so that lateral motion between the body and the bogie is restricted as only part of the bearer is allowed to deform in shear but rotary motion about the pin is not restricted. The lower end of the pin 25 is disposed in a resilient bush 26 fastened to a block 27 slidable in a slot 28 in a cross-bar 12 of the bogie frame. The axles 15, 16 are connected to the longitudinal frame members 13, 14 of the bogie by springs 20 and arms 21 pivoted to the members 13, 14 by lugs 22. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, of the Provisional drawings (not shown), a plate of each bearer 23, 24 is pivoted to rigid links'40, 41 which are pivoted by ball joints 44, 45 to struts 42, 43 rigidly attached to the cross-bar 12 of the bogie. In yet another embodiment, Figs. 3-5 (not shown) of the accompanying drawings, two pairs of the side bearers 154 are each bonded to the body 150 and to a channel member 161 having an arcuate channel 162 bounded by side walls 163, 164 extending close to, and upwards over part of, the side bearers 154. Each channel member 161 is supported on the bolster 151 by four conical rubber springs 170, and the channel 162 is centred on the pivot pin 153. Alternatively the channel members 161 may be mounted on the body 150 and the side bearers 154 between the channel 162 and the bolster 151. In yet a further embodiment, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), the pairs of side bearers 154<SP>1</SP> are each fixed to the body and to the housing a conical rubber spring 185 connected to the bogie. A plate 181 includes an intermediate plate of each bearer 154<SP>1</SP> and'has an arcuate slot 182 centred on the pivot pin. A roller 183 is disposed in the slot 182 and is rotatably mounted on a boss 184 fixed to the housing of the spring 185.
