Abstract

983,688. Railway vehicle undercarriages. SCAW METALS Ltd. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 27, 19621, No. 50875/63. Heading B7L. A railway vehicle bogie includes wheel and axle units 10, 11, Fig. 1, together with their axle box bearings 14, Fig. 3; two side frames 12, 13 pivotally mounted at each end by members 15, 16 about axes longitudinally of the side frames, on the bearings 14; a transverse bolster 21 and spring plank 20 as a unit extending between the lower sides of the side frames and pivotally supported thereon at each end at 23, 24 such that the pivot axes also extend longitudinally of the side frames and are below the first mentioned axes, and at least two spaced cross-ties 25, 26 pivoted at their ends at 28 to the side frames, the pivots 28 being in line with the first mentioned axes. The cross-ties serve to suspend hanger links for brake blocks 29 and further cross-ties may be pivotally connected to the ends of the side frames for suspending additional brake blocks. The pivots between the wheel bearings 14 and the side frames each comprise a female bearing part 16 on the side frame engaged by a rounded knife edge male part 15 on an axle box adaptor 15a. Similarly, the pivot between the bolster and spring plank unit end and the lower side of a side frame comprises a female part 23 and a male part 24. The parts 15, 16 are interchangeable and replaceable as also are the parts 23, 24. The bolster is supported on each end of the spring plank by four compression springs 22, the centre of pressure of which is outside the axes of the pivots 28. The ends of the bolster are each provided with a pair of hollow plunger-like snubber members spring urged into engagement with cover-plates on the sides of openings in the side frames which receive the ends, as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown). According to a modification, the pivotal mountings of the ends of the side frames to the axle bearings and the ends of the bolster and spring plank unit to the side frames, is effected by the use of resilient connections such as rubber bonded to two or more spaced elements.
