Abstract

Compositions of sub-micronic grain dimensions consist of a solid solution of the carbides of at least 2 of the following: Ti, V and Ta, with or without one or more of the following in addition to the solid solution: free carbon, the carbide of one of the metals of the solid solution and an oxide of such a metal. Sintered materials may be prepared from these compositions alone or together with one or more metals or oxides. The compositions may also be mixed with powdered oxides to yield cermet materials or with metals or alloys to provide articles with surface-hardened portions.ALSO:A composition of sub-micronic grain dimensions consists of a solid solution of at least two of the carbides of Ti, Ta and V, with or without one or more of the following free carbon, the carbide of a metal forming part of the solution and an oxide of such a metal. The solution may be prepared by passing a mixture of H2 and CH4 at a temperature of less than 1050 DEG C. over oxides of the appropriate metals, which oxides themselves may be prepared by the pyrolysis in an inert or reducing atmosphere of organic salts of these metals. The pyrolysis is preferably carried out below 500 DEG C., using a H2/CH4 atmosphere. For the carburization, which may be carried out in a fixed or fluidized bed, the CH4 content of the H2/CH4 mixture may be less than 10%. The gases may be recycled after carburization. The solutions may contain up to 10% of carbides of other transition metals, e.g. W, Mo and Nb incorporated by adding organic salts of these metals to the salts of Ti, Ta or V. The solutions may be incorporated in sintered articles, cermet materials, metals or alloys and may be used as catalysts, catalyst supports or in catalytic mixtures. Examples are given of the preparation of TiC/TaC, TiC/VC, TaC/VC and TiC/TiC/VC solid solutions.
