Heading G6C. A moderator structure comprises an assembly of blocks arranged in vertical columns, one or both ends of each block being chamfered on at least two opposite sides of the block, the two chamfers on opposite sides of the block being in regions of different neutron flux. The object of the invention is to reduce the radial forces needed in the core to maintain the columns in alignment against the bowing forces which result from differential length shrinkage across the column width caused by the neutron flux. Fig. 2 shows a chamfered block for use in a structure according to the invention. Both ends of the blocks may be chamfered and they may be of other than square cross-section. The chamfers may be of such an extent as to move the point C on to the centreline. The blocks are preferably graphite, although the invention is applicable to any solid moderator subject to varying shrinkage with varying neutron flux.
