Abstract

1,151,855. Moderator structures. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 15 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965], No. 32828/65. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor moderator is formed of graphite blocks assembled in layers which are interlocked. The layers 11, 12 are hexagonal and are each formed of six identical blocks. The bore 17 may accommodate either fuel handling equipment or control rods. Vertical holes (not shown), are drilled in the blocks to receive fuel rods. The projections 1, 2 on adjacent blocks fit together in pairs within the tapered grooves 9, of the blocks in the adjoining layers. Recesses 13 are cut in the side faces 5, 6 of the top layer blocks to form handling slots.
