Abstract

899,078. Nuclear reactors. NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CO. Ltd. July 18, 1960 [Aug. 10, 1959], No. 27205/59. Class 39(4). A core structure for a nuclear reactor comprises an assembly of blocks of solid material in which the distances between a fixed axis in each block and corresponding axes in adjacent blocks are controlled by means of spacers lying in one or more different planes, each spacer being common to and restrained by at least two blocks, the spacer being of material such that its length is substantially independent of irradiation effects and the distance between points of restraint being made substantially equal to the distance between the corresponding axes of the blocks on which the spacer acts. Fig. 1 shows a plan view of part of a moderator structure comprising blocks of graphite arranged in columns which are spaced apart to allow for Wignes growth. Blocks in adjacent columns are coupled together by spacers 4 to maintain the spacing in the event of shrinkage caused by irradiation. The spacers 4 may be rods or tubes of stainless steel or zirconium and fit loosely in blind holes in the blocks with their ends abutting the ends of the holes, and their lengths are substantially equal to the pitch of the columns. Preferably the spacers in one layer of blocks are at right angles to those in the layers above and below, but spacers in mutually perpendicular directions can be arranged in the same block.
