Abstract

903,580. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. July 22, 1959 [July 28, 1958], No. 25126/59. Class 39 (4). A nuclear fuel element consists of a rectangular plate 20 of fuel with tapered or bevelled ends enclosed in cladding consisting of sidepieces 40, 42 with bevelled ends, end-pieces 32, 34 with V-shaped grooves engaging the bevelled ends, and cover-plates 26, 28. These members are assembled, enclosed in a jacket of Ti-killed low-carbon steel and elongated by rolling at about 1500‹ C. to reduce the thickness of the element by a factor of at least three and to bond the fuel and cladding together. The angle included between the bevelled surfaces is 15 to 60 degrees before rolling. The cladding is Zr or an alloy of Zr. Specifications 767,892, 817,751, 885,891 and U.S.A. Specification 2,798,847 are referred to.
