Abstract

790,688. Nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 14, 1956 [March 18, 1955], No. 8037/55. Class 39(4). In nuclear reactor fuel element, the cooling gas streams across the element, transverse to the length. The fuel may be in the form of a solid rod or comprise a number of plates spaced apart in a frame. As shown, Fig. 3, the element 1, having fins 4 is mounted inside the channel 2 in the reactor core 3. Cooling gas enters at A and leaves at F, the upper and lower gas ducts, 5, 6, being tapered to produce a larger gas flow in the region of high neutron flux, BE, than at regions AD, CF. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, the fuel material is in the form of plates 13, set in the frame 14 in a channel in the reactor core 3. The plates may be of uranium coated with aluminium, beryllium or zirconium and 14 may be of graphite. In further embodiments, (not shown), the fuel plates 13 may be inclined to the vertical and set parallel to the frame length and formed of a continuous strip folded to form parallel sections.
