Abstract

In a fuel element assembly, the fuel elements are subdivided longitudinally into several bundles between which flow-twisters are placed, which flow-twisters force the coolant from one region within one bundle into another region with a different power generation within the next bundle. A more uniform coolant outlet temperature is thus obtained. In one particular example, a radial blanket fuel assembly for a sodium cooled fast reactor comprises two bundles 11, 12 of fertile rods 13 located within a hexagonal wrapper 14 in a triangular lattice and supported by upper and lower grids 15, 16. A flow-twister 17 is integral with the upper grid 15 of bundle 11 and the lower grid 16 of bundle 12. Sodium coolant flow is shown by arrows 20. The flow-twister may be helical with either two or three blades, or may be a device with cross flow ducts where half the flow goes through a central passage and the other half is led in cross flow round this passage. The fuel elements may be in the form of rods, plates or otherwise shaped elements.
