Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and pneumatic cushions; tyres, non-elastic.-A pneumatic tyre A, formed of waterproofed fabric without the usual rubber tread, is fitted with an outer channelled metal hoop a having mud or like clearance holes c, and a central rib e to prevent lateral displacement. For this latter purpose, the flanges of the ring a may be enclosed by detachable spaced brackets f, the flanges being recessed at d to ensure a positive drive of the ring a in all conditions of the tyre A. The brackets f may be replaced by continuous side rings fitted with driving-lugs to engage in the recesses d. Various forms of renewable treads may be fitted to the outer surface of the ring a, such as a grooved metal tyre, a wood ring with an outer metal band. or a solid or cushion rubber tyre secured in the groove e by clips which may have projecting heads to prevent slipping; or, as shown, a channel ring l may be secured over the band and fitted with a tread of rubber, wood, leather, cord, &c. Such a tread may be in sections assembled through a cutaway portion of the rim, which is closed by a specially-formed section secured by a radial screw. Fig. 17 shows a tread formed of wood blocks each in three sections, n, n<1>, n<2>, to admit of successive assemblage around the uncut rim l, the last block n<3> being of full section and secured by a screw.
