A detachable band A for use on the wheels of motor and other road vehicles, adapted to be wound spirally round the tyre and rim and secured by its ends to the rim or spokes of the wheel, is preferably made of rubber strengthened with fabric or like material, those parts of the band which form the tread being made wider or thicker, or both, as shown in Fig. 1. In a modification, shown in section in Fig. 6, the enlarged portions A are formed of separate pieces, preferably of leather, attached by bolts the heads of which project as shown. The band may be formed in one or more pieces, and the width of the tread portions may be varied so that more than one winding is required to cover the tread of the tyre completely.
