In a rectifier system comprising a three/six phase transformer 1 ... 3 and an interphase transformer 14, anode fuses 5... 8 are provided for the rectifiers 4 associated with two (S, T) of the supply phases and isolators 9, 10 are provided for the rectifiers 4 associated with the remaining phase R of the supply. In the event of a D.C. short circuit, e.g. across the load 12, the fuses 5. . . 8 will blow and the action of the interphase phase transformer is to tend to make the currents in the secondary phases R, R<SP>1</SP> equal, but as these currents are in phase opposition they will fall substantially to zero. The isolators 9, 10 are then opened by control means 15 virtually under no-load conditions. The fuses may be bridged by high speed cut-outs which are opened by the means 15 when a fault occurs to permit blowing of the fuses. Fuses and cut-outs may also be provided in the phases R, R<SP>1</SP>, but would only function under the control of the device 15 in the event of " backfire " and not in the event of a D.C. short-circuit.
