Abstract
1,050,882. Drum-winding apparatus. W. REINERS. June 18, 1963 [June 22, 1962], No. 24201/63. Headings D1J and DID. A drum winding machine having automatic means for replacing a fully wound package with a fresh spool is provided with means which determine whether any residual winding exists on the fresh spool and which, if a residual winding is present, activate further means to tie the supply thread to the residual winding; if no residual winding is indicated the supply thread is clamped automatically on the tube and winding proceeds directly. The machine is also provided with a centering arrangement to allow for varying thicknesses of the residual windings and thus to ensure that the spool clamping device is correctly positioned on the spool axis. Thread F from a supply package A passes via a thread guide drum 22 to be wound on a package 21 having a spool 191. A magazine 155 holds a supply of spools S, some of which have residual winding R thereon and a feeler element 604 detects the presence of any such residual winding on the lowermost spool in the magazine. If a winding is indicated the element 604 closes a switch 605 and when the package 21 reaches a predetermined size a further switch 609 is closed completing a circuit to operate thread severing means 607, 608. Simultaneously upon completion of the winding of the package the drive thereto is interrupted and the package withdrawn by means of a bifurcated lever 169, 172 to the position 21' shown dotted. The magazine is pivoted into the position where the lowermost spool rests on the thread guide drum 22 and is clamped in that position. Sensing means (not shown) detect the absence of thread F due to the severing thereof and initiate a thread seeking a tying operation, by means, again not shown, whereby the supply thread is tied to the residual thread on the fresh spool. Normal winding now ensues. If no residual winding is indicated the thread severing means are not operated and when the completed package 21 is moved to the position 21' the thread extends thereto as indicated by the line F'. A guide lever 182 operates to draw the thread to the side of the fresh spool where it becomes clamped between the spool end and the spool clamping means. The stretch F' then breaks when normal winding recommences. As shown in Fig. 2, a counterweighted lever 612 is mounted with the clamping means 611 to ensure that, when lowered on to the fresh spool which rests on the thread guide drum 22 the clamping means are correctly centered on the spool axis. In the clamping operation the spool is shifted axially to prevent the lever 612 remaining in contact with the spool throughout the winding operation.
