Abstract

1,049,522. Laminating. WESTON-EVANS & CO. Ltd. June 7, 1963 [June 12, 1962], No. 22429/62. Heading B5N. Continuous webs are united by applying adhesive as a continuous or discontinuous film to the surface of a drum which has previously been coated with a release agent, allowing the adhesive to become tacky by solvent evaporation; e.g. by heating the drum, bringing a first web against the tacky adhesive and subsequently stripping this web and adhesive from the drum, bringing a second web against the adhesivecoated first web and pressing them together by passing them through rolls. They may then be carried on an endless band over a further heated roll. The first web may be pressed against the adhesive on the drum by a roller or an endless band. The adhesive may be applied to the drum by doctor blade and roller, by spraying, or by off-setting in the form of a network, stripes, or of discrete areas from an engraved or toothed printing roll. The drum may be heated electrically or by steam, water, oil, gas flame or hot air and may be thermostatically controlled. The webs may be of rubber foam and cloth which may be elastic or inelastic and loosely or tightly woven or knitted. The preferred arrangement for feeding the web to the drum is that which forms the subject matter of Specification 1,049,521.
