Abstract

Sheets, blankets pillow cases &c., which are discarded after use, are made of a compound fabric consisting of a layer 1 of synthetic resinous material and a continuous layer 2 of cellulose. The layer 1 is a knitted or woven grid or net of P.V.C., polyethylene &c. welded by heat and pressure to a fleece or web of cellulose e.g. paper, a web of the synthetic resin forming a take-off surface for a web of finished cellulose from a forming or drying machine and the two webs passing between pressure rollers one of which is heated electrically. In modifications a cellulose layer is provided at each side of a synthetic resinous layer, or vice versa, and the synthetic resinous layer may be an imperforate foil, or a foil which is perforated, e.g. by a needed roller, before or after application of the cellulose layer, which may be formed as a sprayed-on coating. In the application of a web of cellulose fibres to a thin web of synthetic resin individual cellulose fibres may be pressed through the web to form the perforations. The surfaces of one or both webs may be corrugated.
