Abstract

A quilt for a bed is provided, suitable, not only for conventional use as a covering for bedclothes overlying a mattress on the bed but also as an alternative, as a covering for a headboard or head-end (4) of the bed, and a bedhead including a headboard or head-end (4) covered with such a quilt. The quilt (1) has on one side thereof at least one area (2) with a colour, pattern, texture or material different from the colour, pattern, texture or material of at least one area (3) on the opposite side of the quilt (1), such that the quilt (1) may be removably attached to or draped over the headboard, head-end or head frame (4) of the bed to provide a selected one of the areas (2,3) outermost on the headboard, head-end or head frame (4) on the bed facing side thereof. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A quilt for a bed This invention relates to a quilt for a bed, suitable not only for conventional use as a covering for bedclothes overlying a mattress on the bed but also, as an alternative, as a covering for a headboard or head-end of the bed, and to a bedhead including a headboard or head-end covered with such a quilt.

Conventional bed headboards may be permanently covered with material such as fabric, which may or may not be quilted for comfort, and once such fabric is soiled it cannot readily be cleaned. Additionally if the bedroom decoration scheme is changed the colour of the fabric on the headboard may be unsuitable for the new decoration scheme making it necessary to go to the extra expense of getting a new headboard also which has a finish or colour more compatible with the new decoration scheme. Moreover the conventional quilt covering the bed clothes may also require to be changed to suit the new decoration scheme, thus adding further to the cost of redecorating the bedroom.

There is thus a need for a generally improved quilt which has more uses than a conventional quilt and for a bedhead having a headboard or head-end or the like covered with such a quilt.

According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a quilt for a bed, which quilt has on one side thereof at least one area with a colour, pattern, texture or material different from the colour, pattern, texture or material of at least one area on the opposite side of the quilt, such that the quilt may be removably attached to or draped over a headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed to provide a selected one of the areas outermost on the headboard, head-end or head frame on the bed facing side thereof.

The term 'quilt' as used in this specification is to be taken to include not only a quilted article but also a non-quilted article constituting what is generally known as a quilt or counterpane for a bed.

Thus a quilt of the invention may readily be removed from the bed headboard, head-end or head frame for cleaning or for variation of the area outermost thereon.

Advantageously the quilt is sheet like in form and substantially rectangular or square in shape.

Preferably the quilt has four areas of different colour, pattern, texture or material, located two on one side and two on the other side thereof, with each area taking up half of the total surface of a side of the quilt.

Conveniently the two areas on each side of the quilt meet at a centre line through the quilt sides.

Each area may be quilted or non-quilted, and when quilted the quilting may extend over the area in a manner such as to extend from top to bottom of the headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed when associated therewith.

Advantageously the quilt is made from cotton or wool fabric, preferably flame resistant, filled with synthetic fibre.

According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a bed head having a headboard, head-end or head frame removably covered with a quilt as hereinbefore described, with a selected one ofthe quilt areas outermost on the headboard, head-end or head frame on the bed facing side thereof.

Preferably the head frame is made of wood, metal or plastics material having struts adjustable to the height of the bed to which it is to be attached, and preferably the frame is provided with lumbar support regions.

Advantageously the head frame is of lattice construction having at least two spaced apart end supports for extending substantially vertically of a bed, which end supports are interconnected by a plurality of spaced apart elongated connecting members which extend generally parallel to one another substantially at right angles to the end supports.

Conveniently the connecting members are so attached to the end supports that they lie in a surface which curves away from the end supports from top to bottom thereof to provide the desired lumbar support regions for the quilt area when overlying the connecting members.

Preferably the quilt is provided with ties whereby it can be removably secured to the head frame.

For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa diagrammatic plan view of a quilt according to one embodiment of the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view to an enlarged scale, of the quilt of Figure 1 shown in operative association with a bed headboard, head-end or head frame, Figure 3 is a view of a detail of the quilt of Figure 2 removed from the bed headboard, head-end or head frame with corner regions of the quilt bent back to show the under surface areas thereof, Figure 4 is a perspective diagrammatic view of a corner detail of a head frame for use with the quilt of Figures 1,2 and 3 to form a bed head of the invention, and Figure 5 is a view from the end of the frame of Figure 4 taken along the line A-A.

A quilt according to a first embodiment of the invention is shown generally in Figures 1,2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings. This quilt one is suitable not only for conventional use as a covering for bedclothes overlying a mattress on a bed but also, as an alternative, as a covering for a headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed. As shown in Figure 1 particularly the quilt 1 has on one side thereof at least one area 2 with a colour, pattern texture or material different from the colour, pattern, texture or material of at least one area 3 on the opposite side of the quilt 1, as shown in Figure 3.

Because of this the quilt 1 may be removably attached to or draped over a headboard, head-end or head frame 4 to provide a selected one of the areas, the area 2 as illustrated, outermost on the headboard, head-end head frame 4 on the bed 5 facing side thereof.

As previously indicated the term "quilt" as used in this specification is to be taken to include not only a quilted article per se as shown in the embodiment of Figures 1,2 and 3 but also a non-quilted article constituting what is generally known as a quilt or a counterpane for a bed.

The quilt 1 of the invention may readily be removed from the bed headboard, head-end or head frame 4 for cleaning or for variation of the area outermost thereon. Thus, as illustrated, the quilt 1 has four areas of different colour, pattern, texture or material located two on one side and two on the other side thereof. Thus as shown on one side of the quilt there is the area 2 and a further area 6 and on the other side of the quilt, that is the reverse side as seen in Figure 1, there is the area 3 and a further area 7.Each area 2,3,6 and 7 takes up half the total surface of a side of the quilt as can be seen in the illustrated embodiment in which the quilt 1 is sheet like in form and substantially rectangular in shape although the shape could alternatively be any other desired shape such as square, necessary to fit any particular shape headboard or head frame 4.

As illustrated the areas 2 and 6 on one side of the quilt 1 meet at a centre or fold line 8 through the quilt sides and similarly the areas 3 and 7 on the opposite side of the quilt meet at the centre or fold line 8 on the opposite side of the quilt 1. The quilt 1 may be made of any suitable material such as cotton or wool fabric preferably flame resistant. As an example the quilt 1 may be made from a cover material manufactured from cotton which is Proban (Trade Mark) treated for flame resistance, polyester cotton which is Proban (Trade Mark) treated for flame resistance or pure wool which is inherently non flammable. Suitable fillings for the cover of the quilt are Treveira CS (Trade Mark) fibre fillings or similar synthetic fibre.

Each area 2,3,6 and 7 may be quilted as illustrated or non-quilted, and when quilted the quilting may extend over the area in a manner such as to extend from top to bottom of the headboard, head-end or head frame 4 of the bed 5 when associated therewith as shown in Figure 2. However the four areas may vary not only in colour but also in pattern as well as being made from different textured materials or different kinds of materials.

Such a quilt 1 may be draped loosely over a conventional headboard of a bed 5, for example as shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings where the quilt 1 is draped over a conventional rectangular headboard so that it is draped over the conventional rectangular headboard at the centre or fold line 8 with the area 2 is outermost or on the bed facing side of the headboard. If desired the quilt 1 may loosely hang over the headboard as illustrated in Figure2 but alternatively the quilt 1 may be attached to the headboard in any convenient manner such as by ties or ribbons on the quilt, Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) attachments on the quilt and headboard or clips or hooks on either the quilt or headboard and corresponding fitments on the other of the quilt or headboard.

In another aspect of the invention the quilt 1 is provided in combination with a head frame 4 to form a bed head in which the frame 4 is removably covered with the quilt 1 with a selected one of the quilt areas 2,3,6 or 7 outermost on the frame 4 on the bed facing side thereof. Preferably, as illustrated, the head frame 4 is made of wood, metal or plastics material having struts 9, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, adjustable, in any convenient manner, to the height of the bed to which the frame 4 is to be attached. Preferably the frame 4 is provided with lumbar support regions such as shown generally at 10 in Figure 5.

The frame 4 may be of lattice construction as illustrated having at least two spaced apart end supports 11 for extending substantially vertically of a bed, which end supports 11 are interconnected in any convenient manner such as bolts, screws or welds, by a plurality of spaced apart elongated connected members 12 which extend generally parallel to one another substantially at right angles to the end supports.

The connecting members 12 are so attached to the end supports 11 such as by brackets 13 of different sizes that they lie in a surface which curves away from the end supports 11 from top to bottom thereof, as may be seen in Figure 5 particularly, to provide the desired lumbar support regions 10 for the quilt area 2, 3, 6,7 when over-lying the connecting members 12. Advantageously the quilt 1 is provided with iaces or ties whereby it can be removably secured to the head frame 4.

A quilt 1 of the invention can thus be utilized in a conventional manner over-lying bedclothes on a bed to provide several areas of different colour, pattern, texture or material uppermost which can readily be varied in a convenient manner as desired by the user. Additionally the quilt can be used in conjunction with a conventional headboard or head frame 4 to provide a readily alterabie cover to the headboard or frame which can be removably located on or attached to the headboard or frame 4 to provide a selected one of two, and preferably four, different colour, pattern, texture or material areas on the bed side of the headboard or frame.

Additionally the quilt when used in conjunction with the headboard or frame can readily be removed therefrom not only for variation of the area outermost but also for replacement or cleaning purposes.

The quilting of the areas 2,3,6 and 7 may alternatively be from side to side or in any other desired pattern or direction. Also the quilt 1 may be made of any suitable fabric, natural or synthetic.

Moreover the frame 4 may be of any shape or form necessary such as, for example, plain board, vertical struts or the like.

Claims

1. A quilt for a bed, which quilt has on one side thereof at least one area with a colour, pattern, texture or material different from the colour, pattern, texture or material of at least one area on the opposite side of the quilt, such that the quilt may be removably attached to or draped over a headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed to provide a selected one of the areas outermost on the headboard, head-end or head frame on the bed facing side thereof.

2. A quilt according to claim 1, which is sheet like in form and substantially rectangular or square in shape.

3. A quilt according to claim 1 or claim 2, having four areas of different colour, pattern, texture or material, located two on one side and two on the other side thereof, with each area taking up half of the total surface of a side of the quilt.

4. A quilt according to claim 3, wherein the two areas on each side of the quilt meet at a centre line through the quilt sides.

5. A quilt according to claim 3 or claim 4, wherein each area is quilted or non-quilted.

6. A quilt according claim 5, wherein each area is quilted with the quilting extending over the area in a manner such as to extend from top to bottom of the headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed when associated therewith.

7. A quilt according to any one of claims 1 to 6, made from cotton or wool fabric, preferably flame resistant, filled with synthetic fibre.

8. A bed head having a head board, head-end or head frame removably covered with a quilt according to any one of claims 1 to 7, with a selected one of the quilt areas outermost on the headboard, head-end of head frame on the bed facing side thereof.

9. A bed head according to claim 8, wherein the head frame is made of wood, metal or plastics material having struts adjustable to the height of the bed to which it is to be attached.

10. A bed head according to claim 8 or claim 9, wherein the frame is provided with lumbar support regions.

11. A bed head according to any one of claims 8 and 10, wherein the head frame is of lattice construction having at least two spaced apart end supports for extending substantially vertically of a bed, which end supports are inter-connected by a plurality of spaced apart elongated connecting members which extend generally parallel to one another substantially at right angles to the end supports.

12. A bed head according to claim 11, wherein the connecting members are so attached to the end supports that they lie in a surface which curves away from the end supports from top to bottom thereof to provide the desired lumbar support regions for the quilt area when overlying the connecting members.

13. A bed head substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 2, 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.

14. A quilt for use in the bed head of claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1,2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.

Claims 2, 4, 5, 7, 9--14 above have been renumbered as 7, 8, 9,11,2-5, 12 and 13 and their appendancies corrected.

14. A quilt according to any one of claims 1 to 7, provided with ties whereby it can be removably secured to the head frame.

15. A quilt substantially as herein before described with reference to Figures 1,2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.

Amendments to the claims have been filed, and have the following effect: Claims 1,3,6,8 and 15 above have been deleted or textually amended.

New or textually amended claims have been filed as follows:- 1.A A bed head having a headboard, head-end or head frame removably covered with a quilt, which quilt has on one side thereof at least one area with a colour, pattern, texture or material different from the colour, pattern, texture or material of at least one area on the opposite side of the quilt, such that the quilt may be removably attached to or draped over the headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed head to provide a selected one of the areas outermost on the headboard, head-end or head frame, on the bed facing side of the bed head.

6. A quilt for use in the bed head of claim 1, which quilt has on one side thereof two areas with a colour, pattern, texture or material different from the colour, pattern, texture or material of two areas on the opposite side of the quilt, with each area taking up half of the total surface of a side of the quilt, and the being such that it may be removably attached to or draped.

10. A quilt according to claim 9, wherein each area is quilted with the quilting extending over the area in a manner such as to extend from top to bottom of the headboard, head-end or head frame of the bed head.
