Description

COVER This invention relates to a removable cover for a bed headboard.
Headboards may be made from a variety of different materials, such as brass, steel or wood, and may additionally be painted or covered with fabric, the fabric being padded and being secured to the headboard by staples or the like. Such a known fabric cover is accordingly not removable without damage to the cover and possibly to the headboard itself.
When they are in use, headboards may become damaged or dirty, and they are relatively expensive items to replace. This is a particularly significant factor with reyard to the headboards for children's beds, which should preferably be kept clean for reasons of hygiene. In addition, unpadded headboards may be uncomfortable to lean against. A further disadvantage is that some types of headboard may be unsuitable for children. For example, padded headboards are frequently provided with buttons for decoration and for retaining the padding, and a child's hair may easily be caught on these buttons.
According to the present invention there is provided a unitary cover for a headboard, the cover being removable without damaging the headboard.
Preferably, the cover is made from washable fabric, and may also be padded or quilted, as appropriate.
The cover may preferably be fastened over a headboard by means of elastic, Velcro (Trade Mark), press studs, hooks and eyes, buttons and buttonholes, zips, ties, or any other suitable method.
In a particularly preferred embodiment the cover is shaped to correspond substantially to the shape of the headboard, and is formed with a front layer of fabric and a back layer of fabric, the front and back layers being connected together at the top and at the sides, the base being left open such that the cover may be slipped over the headboard, and fastenings being provided at the base to secure the cover over the headboard.
It is envisaged that the cover may be suitable for fitting over an existing headboard. Alternatively, headboards could be provided specifically for use with covers such as have been disclosed above.
The size and shape of the headboard and cover could then be made to match and the headboard could be made relatively cheaply, since it is intended to be always covered.
The headboard could, for example, be made from chipboard smoothed at the edges, the chipboard being of a suitable thickness such as 15mm. A cover of fabric quilted on at least one side would be most suitable for this headboard. Alternatively, the headboard could be covered with foam on the front side, and a thin plastic and a plain or quilted cover could be used over the headboard. The headboard should last for many years, while the cover may be regularly replaced.
The cover could be chosen to coordinate with other bedroom furnishings or decor, or with other bed-linen such as duvets and/or pillowcases.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a front view of a cover in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 shows the cover of Figure 1 fitted over a bed headboard.
Clearly the cover 1 shown in the Figures is only one embodiment, and the cover may be made to fit any particular shape and/or size of headboard.
The cover 1 is made from a shaped front layer of fabric 2 and an identically shaped rear layer of fabric (not shown). The front and rear layers are stitched together along the top 3 and the sides 4 and 5 of the cover, but the base 6 is left open and is provided with fastening means 7 which may be press studs or any other suitable fastening means, as discussed above.
The fabric of the cover may be plain or printed, cotton, polyester cotton, viscose or nylon, or any other suitable fabric, and may be mounted onto a layer of 6-80z polyester wadding and suitable lining material.
The cover may be slipped over the headboard 8 as shown in Figure 2, and fastened by way of the fastening means 7 at the bottom of the headboard and around the legs 9 of the headboard.
Clearly, the cover is readily removable for washing, and alternative covers can be provided to match different sets of bed-linen.
The cover may be decorated in any way. For example, a fabric frill or lace edging may be provided around the top and sides of the cover.
