Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in headboards for bedsteads This invention relates to improvements in headboards for bedsteads.
Headboards have been formed from chip board and the object of the invention is to provide a headboard on a frame for attachment to a bedstead.
According to the invention, a headboard comprises, a frame of two upright struts for attachment to a bedstead, a stay or cross bar connecting the two struts and a foam filled envelope on the rear side supported by the stay or cross bar passing through or engaging pockets secured to the envelope.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view of a headboard from the rear showing the headboard frame.
Figure 2 is a similar view of part of the frame in an exploded position.
Figure 3 is a section on lipe 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figures 4, 5and 6 are enlarged details on arrows 4,5,6, of Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a section through a frame, showing the connecting piece.
Figure 8 shows an alternative embodiment.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 8 showing cushions attached.
A headboard A is constructed with a frame B consisting of an upright strut 1 at each end for attachment to the frame of a bedstead (not shown).
Each strut may be formed as a hollow polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or other plastics extrusion, and with a moulded polypropylene angled member 2 have a tongue 3 to enter a bore in the lower end of the strut 1.
The upper end of the strut 1 is formed with a bore to receive a tongue 7 on a junction member 8 which is formed with a second tongue 9 at right angles to the tongue 7 to enter a bore in a PVC cross bar 10.
The cross bar 10 may be connected to a second cross bar 10 for a double bed by a coupling 5, having opposite tongues 11 to enter bores in the bars 10, or tongues 11 may be formed on bar 10 to enter a bore in a bar 1 0.
The two struts 1 and the stay or cross bar 10 thus form a frame to support a foam filled envelope A serving as a padded headboard.
The cross bar 10 passes through a tubular pocket 12 of textile material stitched or otherwise affixed to the headboard A.
The pocket 12 is open at each end through which the stay or cross bar 6 passes to secure the envelope on the frame and to enable the pocket to engage a wall behind the headboard to give rigidity thereto.
The envelope is filled with a foam plastics material which may be held in po-sition therein by screwed buttons passing through the envelope from side to side and provided with a zip fastener along the lower edge for removal of the filling therefrom when the envelope requires washing.
In a modification shown in Figures 8 and 9 the frame B1 is similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 7 but with bars 1 oa having three or more upstanding pegs 13 to receive vertical pockets 1 2a on cushions A to affix the cushions to the frame B1. The cushions may be formed with additional pockets 128, so that the cushions may be reversed end for end. The cushions may be sewn together longitudinally to form a unit. The covers may be removed for washing or cleaning. The cushion covers may be closed at one end by zip fasteners. Upper ends of the cushions may be semi-circular or other shapes and the other ends may be of a different shape so that the unit may be reversed.
Duplicate pockets may be provided on the rear of the unit to engage the bars and thus provide the two alternative arrangements.
The number of cushions forming the unit will vary according to the width of the bed.
The uphoistery material may be anchored in position in the cover by a button or other known device to prevent the filling of the lining from falling to the lower end.
1. A headboard frame for bed steads comprising a frame of two upright struts for attachment to a bedstead, a stay or cross bar connecting the two struts and a foam filled envelope on the rear side supported by the stay or cross bar passing through or engaging pockets secured to the envelope.
2. A headboard frame as in claim 1 in which bar is connected to the struts by tongues on coupling members entering bores in the struts and bar.
3. A headboard frame as in claims 1 or 2 for attachment to a headboard in which the bar passes through a horizontal pocket affixed to the back of the headboard.
4. A headboard frame as in claim 1 or 2 for attachment to a headboard in which the bar is formed with upstanding pegs for engagement by vertical pockets on cushions forming the headboard.
5. A frame for a headboard for bedsteads substantially as described with reference to Figures 1 to 7 or 8 & 9 of the accompanying drawings.
6. A headboard for bedsteads substantially with reference to Figures 1 to 7 or Figures 8 & 9 of the accompanying drawings.
