Abstract

1291862 Pile fabrics I W S NOMINEE CO Ltd 2 Jan 1970 [9 Jan 1969] 1479/69 Heading D1K A pile fabric is made by providing an array of similarly orientated natural or synthetic fibres 5, bending and setting the ends of the fibres, e.g. by heated pressure rollers 6, 6', and securing the bent ends of the fibres in a layer 9 of adhesive, e.g. a discontinuous layer of adhesive droplets applied by a sprayer 7. A backing layer 10, e.g. a woven woollen fabric frame supply roll 11 or a knitted or felted fabric, is applied to the adhesive layer 9 by rolls 12, 12' and the adhesive is cured by infra red lamps 13. The fibres 5 may be cut by a blade 4 from a furred animal skin 1 or a pile fabric and the bending and setting may be obtained by heated rollers with or without the application of moisture. In Fig 6 (not shown) the fibres (5), out from a sliver-knit pile fabric (18), are secured to a temporary support layer of gummed paper 14 by which they are conveyed through the bending rollers (6), (6'), and the adhesive supplying nozzles (7). After application of the backing (10) and curing by the heaters 13 the paper strip (14) is removed at (20). Moisture may be supplied during the bending step to facilitate the setting of the bent fibres.
