Abstract

A discontinuous layer of thermoplastic adhesive is applied to textile material e.g. woven fabric, knitted fabric, non-woven material, fibre sheet from a transfer which comprises a backing of a non woven fibrous material with a pattern of a thermoplastic dry cleaning resistant heat-activatable adhesive over a surface thereof. The weight of the adhesive pattern may be between 15 and 30 grams per square meter. The backing may be a silicone-coated paper. The thermoplastic adhesive may be polyamide or polyacrylic resin based. The transfer may be made by distributing the thermoplastic adhesive in a pattern over the backing of non-adherent non-woven fibrous material and causing the adhesive to set on the backing. The adhesive in the liquid state e.g. an aqueous emulsion or a solution in an organic solvent, may be distributed over the backing by spraying or by impression. The adhesive may be set by passing the transfer through a tunnel dryer. The transfer is applied to the material with the thermoplastic adhesive applied to a part of the material which is to be rendered thermo-adhesive, heat and pressure are applied to the resultant assembly so as to soften the adhesive and cause it to adhere to the material, and the backing is peeled off after the adhesive has cooled.
