Abstract

A pile fabric having a backing of polyurethane foam is embossed after the two layers have been united by adhesive or heat. Impregnation of the fabric with crush-proofing and/or water repelling agents such as dimethylol urea is effected from the pile side after the fabric has been united with the foamed plastic and before being embossed, the laminate being dried before the embossing which may be effected in a calendar heated to 130 DEG C. in the case of a viscose rayon/polyurethane laminate. The fabric may be dyed and printed before being united with the foamed plastic. The pile may be of cotton or of viscose rayon fibres having a flat cross-section and air inclusions.
