Abstract

1,046,848. Shielded containers for radioactive material. SOC LYONNAISE DE PLOMBERIE INDUSTRIELLE. Oct. 11, 1965 [Oct. 21, 1964], No. 43025/65. Heading B4Q. A container comprises an inner metal casing 1 surrounded by a lead screen 4 enclosed in an outer metal shell 8, the space between the shell and the screen being filled with hydrated calcium sulphate 13. The calcium sulphate, which is introduced in a liquid state and subsequently solidifies, provides a thermal and mechanical barrier, its properties being adjusted by the addition thereto of fillers. In the event of a fire the water in the calcium sulphate is liberated as steam which is vented by fusible discs 16. A cover 2 for the casing 1 has a lead liner 5 and an upper plate 11, the space between the liner and plate being filled with hydrated calcium sulphate 13<SP>1</SP>. Flanges 6, 9 welded, respectively, to the casing 1 and cover 2 through intermediate parts 7, 10 are assembled by screws 12, the flanges being provided with fusible plugs 14, 15.
