Abstract
1,141,871. Shielded containers for radioactive material. NATIONAL LEAD CO. 13 April, 1966 [26 April, 1965], No. 16267/66. Heading B4Q. A shipping container for irradiated fuel elements comprises an inner cavity bounded by a cylindrical wall 104 and lead radiation shielding 50 interposed between the wall 104 and a further cylindrical wall 60. An outer wall 22 defines with the wall 60 an annular space which is filled with a thermal shield material 244. Preferably, this material 244 is an alloy of lead and lithium having a melting point well below that of the lead radiation shielding 50 so that in the event of the container being subjected to the heat of a fire the material 244 may flow out of holes 240 provided in the wall 22. The thermal shield material 244 is also provided on the base 64 of the container, the base having release holes 262. Similarly, the container closure 160 is provided with the material 244 and release holes 270. To improve thermal conductivity through the material 244 to facilitate cooling of the fuel elements during normal function of the container, spaced layers of steel 246 (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) are incorporated in the material. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the thermal shield material comprises water which boils off through valves or fusible plugs in the event of a fire. Alternative solid thermal shield material is lead alloyed with tin or antimony; alternative liquid material is glycol or sodium hydroxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 973,448.
