Abstract

1,084,564. Container closures. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1965], No. 6896/65. Heading B8T. A gas permeable gasket, e.g. for a screw cap, is formed from a sealing compound having an intercellular structure created by the incorporation in the compound of a blowing agent and the decomposition of said agent by heating the compound for a time and at a temperature such that the gasket has a specific gravity less than 1. The compound may include polyvinyl chloride in a plasticizer, the blowing agent a hydrazine derivative, and the compound may be heated at a temperature of 425‹ to 465‹ F. for about one minute to give a specific gravity of between 0À4 and 0À7. When applied to the crown of a screw cap the gasket may be in disc or annular form, and the cap crown may have one or more indentations to prevent the rim of the container to which the cap is applied compressing the gasket enough to impede venting. Alternatively, the cap crown may have raised portions with lands therebetween to compress sections of the gasket against the container rim.
