Abstract
1280864 Mixing powdered material ALKEM ALPHA-CHEMIE UND METALLURGIE GmbH 3 Oct 1969 [5 Oct 1968] 48623/69 Heading B1C [Also in Division G6] A mixer for powdered nuclear fuels (e.g. plutanium and uranium of different isotope compositions) has a cylindrical container with a rotatable hollow inner shell 2 the diameter of which is greater than half that of the outer shell 1 and which carries plough blades 3 moving in the annular mixing space 7. The outer shell may be in separable halves and may be rotatable through 180 so that it may be filled from above, and discharged downwardly through the same aperture. The space between the inner shell 2 and the shaft 4 may be filled with reaction absorbing material (e.g. cadmium and boron) and hydrogen-containing reaction moderating material, either in admixture or with a layer of absorber (e.g. in the form of another cylindrical shell) surrounding the moderator. The annular shape of the mixing chamber also assists in avoiding criticality.
