Abstract

1,243,486. Shielded containers. ROBATEL S.L.P.I. 24 July, 1970 [12 Aug., 1967], No. 36035/70. Heading B4Q. A container for radioactive material has the space between an inner lead wall and an outer metal casing filled with thermal insulating material comprising a solid mass of a mixture of hydrated alumina and hydrated iron sesquioxide. In normal working conditions the insulating material is a good heat conductor to remove heat evolved by the radioactive material. Should the container be subjected to an external fire the water in the hydrated alumina turns into steam and protects the lead. The properties of the insulating material are improved by the addition of calcium sulphate hemihydrate. The materials are introduced into the inter-wall space as an aqueous suspension and allowed to set and dry.
