Abstract

1,046,664. Pouches. F O R G R O V E MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Sept. 1, 1965 [Oct. 30, 1964], No. 44435/64. Heading A4G. [Also in Division B8] A package in pouch form for tobacco &c. is formed by securing a cover sheet 10 to a sheet 12 having a cavity 11 containing the tobacco on three sides only, the cover sheet extending beyond the unsealed side to form a flap 15 foldable about the package. The open side may be closed temporarily by an adhesive strip, if desired after exhaustion of air. In an apparatus for forming the package (Fig. 3 not shown) a web 17 is heated and vacuum drawn by means 21 to produce two rows of cavities which are then filled at 22 and a cover web 23 is applied extending beyond both sides of the web 17 to provide material for the flaps 15. Heat sealing means 25 seals the webs together along the centre of the webs and tranversely between the cavities and strips 30 are pressed against the underside of the webs to close the fourth side of the cavities or to adhere to the lower web only, Fig. 4 (not shown) pending transmission to a vacuum chamber (not shown) before final sealing. Longitudinal transverse rotary knives 19, 27 separate the packages.
