Abstract

618,629. Wrapping-up. ROSE, A. G., GILBERT, J. A., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Nov. 6, 1946, No. 32946. [Class 94 (i)] In a package of the kind in which a wrapper of paper, film, foil, or like wrapping material is first folded about one end and two faces in the form of a U with portions extending from the sides and the other end of an article sufficiently to form side and end flaps to complete the wrapping of the article, the last folded side flaps are folded right over the adjacent sides of the article and partially over the adjacent face of the article. The extending portion may be folded on to the adjacent end to complete the package and the package completed by the sealing of the lastfolded end flap, although each fold may be sealed as formed. With thermoplastic material the sealing may be effected by means of heat and pressure. The packages so formed may be wrapped in one or more outer wrappings. In the form shown, to form a package with two wrappers, articles 16, viz. cakes of soap, are fed along a folding channel composed of a platform 17 and a guide plate 18 and engage a wrapper 19 to cause it to pass into the form of a U. In the channel tucking elements 27 cause the portion 26 of the wrapper to fold on to the end faces 28 of the article as in Fig. 2. The upper side flaps 29 by being passed through slots 32 are folded on to the end faces 28. On passing through slots 33 which extend into the guide plate 18 the lower side flaps 31 are caused to fold firstly as in Fig. 4 and then as in Fig. 5. The article 16 is now transferred to a pocket 37 of a pocket wheel 38 by a pair of inwardly movable tucking elements 39, which firstly form tucks on the rear end 36 as in Fig. 6, an outer wrapper 44 being then engaged, the article and wrapper 44 then moving together into the pocket 37 the wrapper 44 being folded as in Fig. 4. On insertion of the article 16 in the pocket 37 the tucking elements 39 move lower end flap 43. The pocket wheel 38 is rotated to carry the article to a further folding station whereby the portion 45 of the wrapper 44 and the upper end flap 42 of the inner wrapper are folded as in Fig. 8 by a member 46. At the next station a side 47 of the pocket 37 is opened and a tucking member 48 tucks in the wrapper 44 to enclose the lower face as in Fig. 9. The tucking member 48 is withdrawn, the movable side 47 closed, and the wheel 38 rotated to carry the article through an idle station to a transfer station where transfer members 49 having tucking members 53 engage an end face of the article to transfer it into a channel having a platform 51 and an upper guide 52. The members 53 and 54 form side tucks as in Fig. 10. In conveying the article through the channel the lower flaps 56 pass through slots 57 to be folded on to the side faces, and then come into contact with gumming wheels 58 on their outside, and finally the upper flaps 56 are passed through slots 59 and so to overlie the folded lower flaps 56 to which they are gummed, and the completed package is then discharged.
