Abstract

A shore comprises telescoping outer and inner tubes 1, 2, a relatively short-threaded shaft 13 received in the outer end of the tube 1 with a work-engageable member 10 and a nut 31 thereon to exert a thrust against the outer end of the tube 1 and rotatable to feed the shaft 13 along the tube 1, the tube 2 having openings 35 and the tube 1 having an aperture aligned therewith through which a tooth 41 on a detent 37 pivoted on the tube 1 is spring- pressed, it being slidable on the tube 2 to enter and cam out of openings 35 when the tubes are moved apart axially but positively engaging such an opening, when the tubes 1, 2 are moved towards each other. The tube 2 has openings 47 along a different axial line the tube 1 having a detent 39 and an aperture as described above, the openings 47 being staggered along the tube 2 relative to the openings 35, and the detents 37 and 39 being similarly staggered on the tube 1 and simultaneously entering respective openings. A sleeve 8 can fit against the outer end of the tube 2 and inward of the outer end of the tube 1, and the shaft 13 can slide in the sleeve 8 to seat against its end, the tube 2 having a shoulder 7 to seat the sleeve 8 thereat, the outer end of which has a shoulder 9 for seating against the outer end of the tube 1. A projecting tube 6 may be within a sleeve 8 at the outer end of the tube 2. An extension tube 4 to the tube 2 has a projecting tube 44 held within one end of the tube 4 by a spring 48 attaching it to the tube 2 with the tubes 2 and 4 abutting.
