Abstract

1,044,779. Vices. J. BERNHARD. Dec. 2, 1963 [Dec. 1. 1962], No. 47462/63. Heading B3B. A vice comprises a jaw 4a fixed to a frame 1, 2, 3, 4, an actuating member 6 for moving a jaw 10, guide surfaces 11, 12, 13, 14, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), on the jaw 10 co-operating with surfaces or guides on the frame, surfaces 8 at the opposite sides of the guides for guiding an auxiliary sliding member 7 connected between the movable jaw 10 and the actuating member 6, and bendable or articulated elongated means 15, 16 for connecting the jaw 10 to the member 7, the connection to the member 7 lying in a vertical plane passing through the fixed jaw. The fixed jaw 4a, Figs. 2 and 6 (not shown), is integral with the end 4 of the rectangular open frame. The jaw 4a has a wedge-shaped facing 4b secured thereto by screws 4e and resilient washers 4f. The jaw 10 contains four blocks 110b, 120b, 11b, 12b, Figs. 4 and 5, which may be resilient and which rest on the guides 2, 3. The two front blocks 110b, 120b have rubber mountings 110c, 120c and the rear-blocks are domed to allow tilting. (In a modification, the blocks are replaced by pivoted rods.) The front of the jaw 10 is connected by the pivoted rods 15, 16 to the member 7 having a nut 7a engaged by the screw 6. The rear end of the jaw 10 is connected to the member 7 by screws 25 having clearance in the block and being engaged by springs 30 which take up play between the block and the guides 2, 3. The jaw facing 4b, Fig. 6, has a supporting projection y and a slot 4h to assist in preventing lifting of the clamping point when distortion occurs due to clamping as illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown). The jaw facing may have a slight inclination at its clamping surface to compensate for distortion.
