In a document holder for use with a photographic copying camera wherein a book or document to be photographed is placed upon an entablature comprising two separate document-support plates in side by side relation, the said support plates are capable of vertical movement toward a transparent planar surface between the entablature and the camera, this movement is effected by a pedal and the mode of movement is selective in that the documentsupport plates can be moved either by means in direct contact with the pedal or by a balance arm, the pivot of which can be raised or lowered by mechanism associated with the pedal. The document holder shown comprises a frame 1 on which columns 4, 5 carrying document support plates 6, 7 are slidable in guides 3. Pegs 8, 9 on the columns engage vertical guides 10 so that the columns cannot rotate. Axles 20 on the columns are engaged by arms 19 pivoted on the same axis as a pedal 13, which is provided with arms 15. Through each arm 15 passes a screw 16 and this screw engages a lug on the corresponding arm 19. Thus, by operating the screws the plates 6, 7 may be independently raised or lowered, and by actuating the pedal 13 the plates can be simultaneously raised through the same distance. There is also provided a bar 21 which is slidable vertically in guides 22 and is prevented from rotation by an arm 23 which engages the guides 10. This arm carries a rod 24 and also has pivoted thereto at 29 a balance arm 28 which engages under the pegs 8 and 9 ; the pivot 29 can be raised or lowered by a screw 27. Arm 24 engages above the arms 15 on the pedal 13 and so by operating the screws 16 to remove the arms 19 from axles 20, and then operating the pedal 13 the plates 6, 7 can be moved under the control of the balance arm 28. Bar 21 carries an arm 25 which is adapted to interfit with the binding of a book and the pedal 13 is operated to press the book against a transparent platen 2 between the plates 6, 7 and the copying camera.
