Abstract

A silicon rod 2, (Fig. 4, not shown) which may be rotated, is fed to a molten zone 4 heated by an induction coil 3 and having an enlarged offset solidifying interface from which an enlarged rod 2a crystallizes on to a rotating seed rod 5, seed rod 5 and enlarged rod 2a being withdrawn from coil 3 at a lower speed than feed rod 2 is advanced towards coil 3. Before commencement a normal molten zone is formed in feed rod 2, lowering of the rods and rotation of seed rod 5 are then commenced, and the axis of seed rod 5 is moved out of alignment with the axis of feed rod 2. Seed rod 5 may be rotated at 5-100 rpm and lowered at 2 mm/min. Feed rod 2 may be lowered at 8 mm/min. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), movement of the rods is upwards.
