Abstract

1,044,238. Counterbalancing loads. CONCO ENGINEERING WORKS Inc. March 30, 1965 [April 1, 1964; Jan. 14, 1965; March 8, 1965], No. 13407/65. Heading B8B. A counterbalanced lever system for supporting a load 29, Fig. 1, in various adjusted positions incorporates a fluid - actuated piston and cylinder assembly 41, 42 which balances at least a part of the load by the application of a substantially constant force at different positions of the arms. In the example, the unloaded vertical arm 28 for supporting the load 29 is balanced baout a fixed pivot Y of a horizontal arm 10 by a counterweight 33 on a vertical arm 32. The piston and cylinder assembly 41, 42 is controllably actuated to counterbalance the load 29 when applied to the arm 28, the pressure being released when the load is removed. Modifications are described in which the piston and cylinder assemblies are mounted on rollers or slides whereby the assemblies remain substantially vertical throughout the movements of the lever system so that the applied restoring force is always vertical. Hydraulic and pneumatic systems are described for push-button control of pre-selected different pressures for different loads. A system for initiating automatic up and down cyclic movements of the load is also described.
