Abstract

1,056,680. Lifting apparatus. MIDLAND-ROSS CORPORATION. Nov. 3, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1963], No. 44815/64. Headings B8B and B8H. A spreader for lifting and levelling a cargo container supported at its top comprises a rectangular frame 5, Fig. 2 (not shown), enclosing an X- shaped sub-frame placed on the diagonals of the rectangle, the frames being suspended by four cables 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d extending from an overhead shackle 6, Fig. 2 (not shown), over vertical sheaves 39, 40, 41, 42 mounted at the four corners of the sub-frame, over further aligning sheaves 36, 37, 38 and connected to an anchor member 7 slidable along guide 18 rigid with the frame. An hydraulic doubleacting ram 9 has its cylinder 46 connected to the frame and piston connected to the anchor member 7, for moving the member 7 longitudinally of the spreader causing a levelling thereof if a list is caused by the container centre of gravity being horizontally displaced from the centre of the spreader. The control of the anchor member movement is effected by a double solenoid-operated reversing valve 53, Fig. 5 (not shown), diverting pressurized fluid to either end of the ram 9. The solenoids are operated either manually by button switches or automatically by tiltsensitive switches once a further button switch is pressed.
