Abstract

1,043,293. Printing-apparatus. H. ZAHN. March 3, 1964 [March 23, 1963], No. 8857/64. Heading B6C. A rotary offset printing machine, Fig. 1, comprises a printing cylinder 1 carrying a printing foil, an offset cylinder 3 carrying a rubber blanket, an impression roller 4, a plurality of rotatably mounted forme inking rollers 2, 20- 22, each of the rollers 20-22 being provided with a portion of its length, such as 23, which is of smaller diameter than the rest of the roller and does not transfer ink to the foil on the cylinder 1, and a plurality of electromagnets 8, 9, 26-31 which are adapted to be energized so that they act on the shafts of the forme inking rollers to trip them into or out of engagement with the printing cylinder 1. The forme roller 2 is supplied with ink by a further roller 6 and the magnets 8 and 9 are rotatable on shafts 18, 19 so that the roller 2 always co-operates with the roller 6 in both its operative and inoperative positions. The forme rollers are all axially adjustable in bearings, Fig. 10 (not shown), in order to ink a certain breadth of the printing foil. Lines on the printing foil are selectively inked by tripping the forme inking rollers according to a programme determined by a device 57 comprising a control disc 72, Fig. 3, having a groove 73 and a micro-switch 74 co-operating therewith. The disc is connected to a rotatable knob 37 by ball bearings 76 and is angularly adjusted to a position indicated by a scale 45, Fig. 1, on rotation of the knob when it is required to alter the timing of the tripping in of the roller 2. The other forme rollers are similarly controlled and controls 53-56 are provided on the device 56 for operation when it is required to continuously ink the foil. The device 57 is driven from the cylinder 3 via a toothed belt 32. The micro-switch control of the discs may be replaced by a photo-electric control assembly such as that of Fig. 7 (not shown), in which a light beam passes through the grooves in two adjacent control discs or that of Fig. 8 (not shown) in which code marks for controlling the inking tripping programme are carried by the cylinder 1 and are interpreted with the aid of a light source and a photo-cell. The forme rollers may apply ink of different colours.
